Narrative Practice Workshop

Facilitated by

Kevin O’Sullivan

We create and document our lives through stories - we always have. The genius of Michael White and David Epston was to recognise this and to turn it into a way of having conversations with people who seek our help to bring about change.

If you’re interested in working in a way that doesn’t pathologise people’s experience, this two-day workshop may be for you.

Together we’ll explore the Narrative approach and see how the ideas translate into effective practice. We’ll examine each of the steps of the narrative conversation and try our hand at fitting them together using our own experiences.

Whether you’re a beginner or have some knowledge about narrative, you will have opportunities to experience the process: no role plays, just real life. This approach changed the way I work - I hope it will enhance your work too.

You will leave this 2 day workshop with:

  • Clarity about the essentials of the narrative approach
  • Personal experience of how the narrative approach works
  • Enthusiasm to practice what you’ve discovered

Warning!
If you want to sit and look at lots of PowerPoint slides, this one’s not for you!

I live and work in Port Macquarie. I am endorsed as a clinical and forensic psychologist and an accredited supervisor for registrar psychologists.

As well as being a member of The Group Psychology Practice, I belong to a research group studying trauma and stress in judicial work. For this research, I am attached to the University of Western Australia as a Principal Research Fellow - Associate Professor and to the University of NSW as a Conjoint Senior Lecturer.

I see my job as working to create a therapeutic space that suits each person, and I generally use a Narrative Practice approach, working mostly with individuals and sometimes with groups. The work focuses on the positive outcomes the person wishes to achieve rather than on the problem-laden, unhelpful, self-view. In therapy, the past is only useful if we can use it as a quarry to build the future.
